Chinese New Year: Why Do Filipinos Celebrate It?

 


Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture. It marks the beginning of a new year based on the lunar calendar and is believed to bring prosperity, good fortune, and happiness. The celebration includes traditions such as dragon and lion dances, fireworks, family gatherings, and giving tikoy (sticky rice cake) as a symbol of unity and luck.

In the Philippines, Chinese New Year is widely observed due to the strong Chinese influence in our history. Many Filipinos have Chinese ancestry, and the Filipino-Chinese (Tsinoy) community plays a vital role in our society, especially in business and trade. Because of this, the country has embraced Chinese traditions, showing deep respect for their culture and beliefs.


In conclusion, Filipinos also share similar values with the Chinese, especially the belief in prosperity and good luck. Many follow Chinese New Year traditions, such as wearing red, preparing round fruits, and displaying lucky charms, hoping to attract wealth and happiness for the coming year. The government even recognizes it as a special holiday, allowing people to celebrate with their families.

The celebration of Chinese New Year in the Philippines is more than just a tradition—it reflects our rich cultural heritage and unity with the Chinese community. Whether for luck, respect, or simply the joy of festivities, Filipinos will continue to welcome the Lunar New Year with excitement. Gong Xi Fa Cai!      Almost everyone sees me as a jolly person, though some judge me because I’m too noisy. But each day, I face my own battles. People only know me based on the person I choose to present. With that in mind, I would describe myself as a book—a reflection of my true self. "Extrovert" is the term they use to describe me, but for me, the word "book" is more accurate. They only know the first page of my story, the part I choose to show. They may know me, but they don’t truly understand me; it's like judging a book without reading it. My life is like a book; you can’t understand it without analyzing each chapter. Just sit beside me and listen to my rants. Understand each chapter of my life, from what I’ve been through to how I’ve managed to survive. In conclusion, it's easy to judge someone without knowing every part of them. But if you take the time to understand, you'll see why I am the way I am.
